Liquid Soap: What To Avoid And What To Look For [2021]

What are private label cosmetics?

Nowadays, most of us want to be conscious consumers - we want to know what we purchase, how it benefits us as well as whether it is environmentally friendly and cruelty-free. No matter the amount of effort and research it actually entails, we must confirm that it is a good feature to have - we minimize the negative impact both on ourselves and those around us. How is it with liquid soaps then? What should we avoid or seek on the ingredient lists? Let's dig in below.

As always, summary! In this article you will learn:

  • What exactly hair ampoules are
  • How to use hair ampoules
  • Which ones are for your specific hair type
  • Can hair ampoules stimulate hair growth?

  • How to create your brand of ampoules

Basics of liquid soaps

The first thing to look for in a product is its core - in the case of liquid soap, this role is ascribed to a surfactant. Its function is not only to create coherency between the cosmetic’s water and oil fractions but also to produce foam which makes soap pleasant to apply. Sadly, a wide range of surfactants is either significantly irritant to the skin, not environmentally friendly, or both.

Surfants in liquid soaps: what to opt for and what to avoid?

The most commonly used surfactant by liquid soap suppliers is definitively sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS for short. Over the past years, it has earned a notoriously bad reputation due to multiple reasons. First, its dermatological safety has been scrutinized only to confirm that regular contact with SLS is likely to cause skin irritation that subsides, having resigned from the application of a sodium lauryl sulfate product. This phenomenon is explained by the fact that SLS is a so-called “ionic surfactant” - a kind of surfactant of denaturation properties which disrupt the skin’s natural structure. Moreover, as sodium lauryl sulfate is made from palm oil, its manufacture is anything but detrimental to the environment.

A good question is what to buy in place of SLS if you are an eco-conscious buyer or do not want to weaken your skin’s condition. For the latter, opt for liquid soaps with natural non-ionic surfactants like coco glucoside or sucrose cocoate - the second one is even more beneficial since it supports the skin’s natural pH. On the other hand, if you want to limit the palm oil footprint, check whether a detergent in your soap does not contribute to it. Some substances may be presented as ecologically friendly, nonetheless for instance seemingly innocent sodium coco sulfate contains approximately 50% sodium lauryl sulfate what is not so good anymore.

Which skincare ingredients to look for in a liquid soap

Without hesitation, liquid soap is not only made of a surfactant. To minimize the impact that washing has on the skin of the hands like being drying to the skin and disrupting its natural pH, liquid soap producers often add soothing and nourishing ingredients to their products. Look for repairing oils like shea butter or olive oil, calming oats, plant extracts or aloe vera. For the same reasons, avoid artificial fragrances and parabens.

Conclusion

Hair ampoules are highly concentrated products hence provide desired effects in a relatively short period of time – usually 4 – 8 weeks. Depending on their purpose, they contain plentiful active ingredients from regenerative to soothing substances. They offer an intense, complex treatment practically for any hair condition as well as notably improve the state of any kind of hair and scalp. As long as we examine the INCI and make sure the ingredients are good, which is a topic for another time.
